Over 150 delegates gathered at The Crypts in Guildhall, London this week for a high profile business reception jointly hosted by Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Deirdre Hargey in partnership with Catherine McGuinness, Chair of the Policy and Resources Committee, The City of London.

This important event in the Belfast-London business calendar follows the Autumn budget statement announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer approving funding for The Belfast Region City Deal that will deliver more than 20,000 new and better jobs through a 10-year programme of co-investment, reinforcing Belfast’s position as one of the leading UK Financial and Professional Services Centres - and a region at the forefront of innovation and technological advances.

Business leaders from the financial, professional services and technology sectors in London and Belfast heard how Belfast is leading transformation in their industries.

And representatives from key investors including Alexander Mann, Citi, Concentrix, Deloitte, Herbert Smith Freehills and PwC as well as leading Belfast companies including Datactics and MKB Law, joined future prospective investors to hear about Belfast’s transformation from shipbuilding mecca to Fintech hub.

Speaking after the reception, Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Deirdre Hargey commented: “We're delighted to see our collaboration with The City of London continue to develop this evening as we forge ahead with our ambitious plans to grow our city’s economy through The Belfast Agenda and the Belfast Region City Deal.

“We were joined by good friends of Belfast, old and new and we’re enthused about the opportunities that exist for mutually beneficial business relationships to grow between our two great cities.

“Belfast is at the forefront of a tech revolution with unrivalled expertise in Fintech, Cybersecurity and Blockchain. Our ability to nurture fast-growth technology businesses alongside large global corporations is testament to the collaborative environment that exists in our city; an environment where knowledge-sharing, talent and the development of niche skills powers future growth.”

Suzanne Wylie, Chief Executive of Belfast City Council commented: “London remains a hugely important market for Belfast companies and events such as this evening’s provide excellent opportunities for our company leaders to develop new contacts and access new sources of business. The relationship between Belfast City Council and The City of London is going from strength to strength.”

Catherine McGuinness, Chair of Policy at the City Corporation, said: “It was a pleasure to host this event for Belfast, one of the City Corporation’s key regional partners. The City Deal investment programme is not only good news for the Belfast region but for London and the whole of the UK. Further growing the Belfast Region’s strong offer in innovation, technology and Financial and Professional Services increases the competitiveness of the whole UK economy."
