Family is something to be appreciated – that is the message from visitors to Belfast City Council’s annual Rose Week as winners of the ‘someone to receive a rose’ competition met with the Lord Mayor at Belfast City Hall.
All three winners, drawn from more than a 1,000 entries received during visits to Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park, were nominated as someone special by family members.
Craigavon woman, Noreen Magee; Millie McEldowney from Newtownabbey; and Belfast woman Jackie Catherwood each received an award winning rosebush from Lord Mayor, Councillor Deirdre Hargey.
Family members who nominated them also attended the presentation in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour.
Noreen was nominated by her sister Gemma McShane because ‘she is my sister’; Millie McEldowney’s daughter Sharon nominated her because ‘she is a fantastic mum and grandmother’; while Jackie Catherwood’s husband ,Eddie, said he wanted her to have a rose because ‘she deserves something special’.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Hargey, said: “Rose Week is one our premier summer events and is primarily aimed at families with lots of free entertainment to keep people of all ages happy.
“More than 60,000 people attended this year’s event taking advantage of the lovely weather to enjoy time together as well as the range of activities on offer from music to dance, street entertainers, workshops, refreshments and the flower show.
“It is very heartening to see family members appreciating each other and joining in the fun by taking the time to nominate, a sister, wife, mother and grandmother – I am sure each of them appreciate the gesture and thought behind it.
“I hope the rosebushes flourish wherever the winners plant them and provide a reminder of a wonderful week and a permanent reminder of how much their family appreciate them,” she added.
