How can you improve air quality?
There are lots of ways you can improve air quality, reduce environmental pollution and improve your quality of life.
Here are some ideas.
Car use
Road vehicles are a major source of air pollution in urban areas like Belfast. They are responsible for more than half of nitrogen dioxide emissions and more than 75 per cent of carbon monoxide emissions in the UK.- Consider using a 'park and ride' scheme, such as those operated by Translink
- Cold engines produce more pollution than warm engines, so avoid using your car for short journeys
- Walk or cycle when you can - check out our walking routes and cycling routes for alternative ways to reach your destination
- Drive at a steady pace - rapid acceleration and heavy breaking use more fuel, cost more and wear out car parts
- Turn your engine off if you are sitting in a long traffic jam or at a level crossing to save fuel
- Get your car serviced regularly so it runs efficiently, saves fuel and limits pollution
- Make sure your tyres are set to the right pressure to help your car run smoothly
- Car share with your neighbours or colleagues to spread the cost of petrol and reduce the number of cars on the road
- Buy a smaller car to reduce your fuel emissions and save on tax, insurance and petrol or diesel
- Buy or convert your existing car to run on greener fuels.
At home
Saving energy at home can reduce air pollution and save you money on bills.- Always use water-based or low-solvent products like paints, glues, varnishes and wood preservatives when doing DIY
- Never light bonfires when air pollution levels are high or when the weather is still and cold
- Avoid burning household waste - most materials can be recycled at our recycling centres or civic amenity sites
- If possible, avoid burning solid fuels
- If you live in a smoke control area, only burn authorised smokeless fuels.
