No smoke without litter
A smoking-related information pack for businesses
Belfast is a smoke-free city. This means it is against the law to smoke in most enclosed workplaces and public places, including bars, clubs, restaurants and certain vehicles. The Smoking (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 has been well received since it came into force in April 2007.
However, there have been some negative effects such as the amount of smoking-related litter that is dropped when people gather together to smoke.
We have produced an information pack, No smoke without litter, to encourage businesses to tackle this problem.
How big a problem is smoking-related litter?
In a recent survey, we found litter from smoking on 75 per cent of the streets inspected. This includes butts, matches and cigarette packets.
A survey by Tidy Northern Ireland found a 33 per cent increase in cigarette-related litter outside bars, pubs and restaurants from April to October 2007.
If you are caught dropping litter, we can issue a fixed penalty fine of £50.
What does the information pack include?
The No smoke without litter pack provides information for businesses on how they can help reduce smoking-related litter around their premises. This includes installing cigarette disposal facilities, promoting the use of pocket ashtrays amongst staff and customers and displaying anti-litter posters.
How can I get an information pack?
No smoke without litter information packs are free to any business in Belfast. To order a pack, or to sign up to our Tidy Business Charter, call us on 028 9032 0202 (extension 5377) or email us at catcleansing@belfastcity.gov.uk
