Design Out Crime recommendations (for Avoniel Park and Avoniel Leisure Centre)
The following recommendations have been made by the Design Out Crime initiative, compiled by the PSNI Crime Prevention Team, for Avoniel Park and Avoniel Leisure Centre. They form part of our action plan for the area:
- define a staff car parking area and display signs to show entrances and park bye-laws
- set up electronic access control for entry to Avoniel Leisure Centre
- use thorny shrubs adjacent to perimeter fence where appropriate, for example, alongside all fencing that could be climbed over
- new fencing should match and be a minimum of two metres high
- consider using an IBEX, anti-climb fence design
- allow just enough uniformity and illumination of pathways to make the area shadow-free and upgrade present lighting and CCTV systems
- remove graffiti
- paint columns, fences and bollards
- install kissing gates at the park's two remaining access points with a drop bar design. This can be used to restrict access for short periods while park rangers are dealing with scramblers.
- remove excess vegetation and shrubbery
- annex doesn't meet modern building conditions - this is suspended until the future of Avoniel Leisure Centre is decided
- remove the wall at the Beersbridge Road end of the park
- continue to cut woodland back as people use it to hide behind and replace with railings.
