Design Out Crime recommendations (for Falls Park, City Cemetery and Whiterock Leisure Centre)
The following recommendations have been made by the Design Out Crime initiative, compiled by the PSNI Crime Prevention Team, for Falls Park, City Cemetery and Whiterock Leisure Centre. They form part of our action plan for the area:
- remove undergrowth from the area between Falls Park and City Cemetery
- install new bins which match the Victorian look and feel of the park and cemetery
- set up an information campaign to reinforce the message that dogs are not allowed in the park
- set up additional patrols by park rangers and officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI)
- grease walls at Whiterock Road
- replace ornate bollards at Whiterock Road which are currently damaged
- improve the way in which notices are displayed on-site
- a one-way system for traffic has been requested by the Department of Regional Development but barriers are needed to stop cars and visitors gaining unauthorised access to the site
- display park bye-laws throughout the park and at site entrances
- erect new signs which provide clear directions through the park
- remove graffiti
- paint all entrances and fencing
- install new on-site street lighting to make sure the park is well lit throughout
- make sure all park furniture, such as bins, benches and dog litter bins, are well-constructed
- fit intruder alarms on-site and consider installing panic buttons for staff which are linked to an alarm system
- review the use of large rocks to 'block off ' areas as these are often used by large crowds to gather around
- consider installing a 'Youth Shelter' for young people
- create changing and parking facilities to encourage local sports clubs to use the park
- fit 1.2 metres of mesh fencing on top of the existing metal bar fencing at the Norfolk Drive end of the park
- cut back the willow trees (near the Gaelic pitches) and the vegetation (at the river walkway) to deter people from drinking in the park.
