Design Out Crime recommendations (for Woodvale Park)
The following recommendations have been made by the Design Out Crime initiative, compiled by the PSNI Crime Prevention Team, for Woodvale Park. They form part of our action plan for the area:
- clean up the bandstand by installing ornate fencing around its perimeter and adding recess lighting to make the structure a feature at night
- install suitable lighting to increase community safety (if the park remains open to the public)
- remove the toilet block as toilets are available inside the bowling pavilion
- make sure graffiti is removed from all areas of the park before 11am on the morning it appears
- remove vandalised bins and replace with standard council bins
- paint the gates at all the access points
- paint the railings from the Woodvale Avenue entrance to the bowling pavilion as well as the seats around the bowling green
- install a 2.5 to three metre high, difficult to scale fence on the park's boundary (at the kickabout area)
- install pink bulbs at the children's playground, kickabout area and bandstand
- add kissing gates to all the pedestrian access points (four in total)
- renovate existing shrub borders, carry out selective pruning and plant new lower-growing species to make sure there are no 'hiding places' in the park
- get schools involved in tree planting
- ensure the park is well-lit at night to help police officers and youth workers identify anyone left in the park after hours
- encourage trespassers to take part in diversionary activities
- check lighting for main arterial routes running through the park
- upgrade pitches and look at how they are lit
- install improved signage which displays park bye-laws and a contact telephone number at all the park's access points
- place a notice on van dashboards for park rangers to remind them to close the gates behind them when they enter and leave the park
- install double-aspect lighting at the kickabout area (beside Tesco).
