Design Out Crime recommendations (for Dunville Park, Clonard area and Falls Leisure Centre)
The following recommendations have been made by the Design Out Crime initiative, compiled by the PSNI Crime Prevention Team, for Dunville Park, Clonard area and Falls Leisure Centre. They form part of our action plan for the area:
- entrance areas to Dunville Park should be decorative and should use the park name
- recommend that the park should be open to pedestrians at all times
- remove graffiti as soon as possible using anti-graffiti solution
- display bye-laws at entry points, for example, the fact that alcohol consumption and the riding of motor vehicles is strictly prohibited
- clearly mark park exits
- install subtle street lighting throughout the park to ensure the grounds are evenly lit
- gate the children's play area and install signs which clearly show the target age range for equipment
- repair playground equipment and consider designing swings so they can be removed at night
- restore or remove Dunville Fountain (a short term option is to plant out the bowl area of the fountain)
- mark out a football pitch and install goalposts and a low boundary to clearly mark its perimeter and deter scramblers and dogs from the area
- replace the perimeter fence with low-level ‘bow’ fencing
- the camera in the alleyway opposite Falls Leisure Centre Camera needs lighting to be effective and to protect the centre's windows from damage
- manage park vegetation
- install double-aspect lighting at the top end of the park (where the pitch will be marked out)
- open the pedestrian gates 24/7 to allow people into the park at all times. This promotes natural surveillance, increases park activity and 'squeezes out' ASB.
