Design Out Crime recommendations (for Waterworks)
The following recommendations have been made by the Design Out Crime initiative, compiled by the PSNI Crime Prevention Team, for Waterworks.They form part of our action plan for the area:
- recommend that the park should be open to pedestrians at all times
- install a perimeter fence at Westlands Estate (this has been rejected by local residents following a consultation)
- increase the height of the gate at Cavehill Road end of the park
- fit six new bright bins
- erect fence and gate beside the fire station on Cavehill Road
- plant whitethorn hedging along the perimeter of the proposed new fence, as well as additional heavy defensive planting within the wetland area
- provide CCTV (this has been rejected)
- increase park lighting
- increase the height of the original gates to match the height of the security fencing at the Westland Gardens entrance
- 'thin out' the woodland area adjacent to Westland Gardens
- remove the steps at Cavehill Road end of the park
- add additional lighting to the area around the pond and the fountain
- deter drinkers by removing a wall which is used to gather around
- plan out diversionary activities in consultation with relevant groups and agencies
- develop education, awareness and drug and alcohol support work
- install three new benches.
