Advice and suggestions for greener living
There are lots of ways you and your family can develop a greener lifestyle.Let young children help you with recycling, encourage teenagers to revamp old clothes or grow their own food and ask grandparents to turn your food scraps into compost for their garden.
For example, when you're shopping, buy soap instead of shower gel as it uses less packaging, or if you have young children, use reusable, washable nappies instead of disposable ones as they are cheaper and create less waste.
Here are some more suggestions to encourage your family to 'think green':
- Energy efficiency
You can save money and energy by switching off plugs when they aren't being used, installing insulation, turning your heating down or off, fitting energy saving lightbulbs and turning off lights.
- Home repairs
Got DIY to do? Hire or borrow the equipment you need, such as steam strippers, high-pressure cleaners and carpet cleaners, rather than cluttering up your garage.
- Food and drink
Get children involved with food shopping and ask them to suggest meals and recipes the whole family can enjoy. Encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables and explain what foods are good for both them and the environment.
-
Clothes
Ask around your family and friends for old garments their own children may have grown out of. Teach your children craft skills, like knitting and sewing, and encourage them to think about how they can reuse their clothes or give them a new lease of life.
-
Travel
Lead by example by walking, cycling or using public transport when you can. Avoid plane journeys where possible or, if you really have to use a plane, always off-set your carbon emissions.
-
Recycling
Make sure everyone in your family sorts their rubbish into the correct bins and thinks about what they can recycle. Make a weekly or monthly trip to your local recycling centre and regularly collect material for charity shops.
Encourage your family to think about repairing items first before purchasing newer versions.
