Brown bins

Brown bin Some households in Belfast have a brown bin for recycling certain types of waste. This is in addition to your black bin which is used for general waste not suitable for recycling.

Food waste collection service

On 1 March 2010, we introduced a new food waste collection service which allows you to place food waste in your brown bin.

We've delivered food waste caddies, biodegradable bags and information leaflets about the new service to homes with brown bins.

What can I put in my food waste caddy?

If you put the wrong items in, or use plastic bags, in your food waste caddy, we will not be able to collect your food waste. If this happens, simply place your food waste in your black bin instead.

Brown bin collection dates and times

Brown bins are collected on the same day as your black bin, although they are picked up by different vehicles.

In 2010 - 2011, we will collect brown bins between:
This means that your brown bin will be collected fortnightly between 1 March - 24 December and monthly during the winter months of January and February.

Normal fortnightly collections will then start again from 28 February 2011.

Don't forget, always leave your bin out by 7am to make sure it is collected.

On public and bank holidays, as well as Christmas and New Year, collection dates may vary.

The label below contains details of when your bins will be collected on public and bank holidays (including Christmas and New Year) in 2010 and 2011. Attach it to your bin to remind you when to put it out for collection.
