Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste is anything which could be harmful to your health or the environment. Examples of common household items which may pose a potential hazard include:

• paint
• paint strippers or thinners
• solvents
• bleach
• chemical cleaning agents
• garden chemicals
• car batteries
• engine oil
• gas bottles
• asbestos*

Disposing of hazardous waste

Items which may pose a hazard should be taken to one of our recycling centres

You should handle the items with care and ask our staff to help you place them into a skip.

* Asbestos is a particularly hazardous material which requires special disposal. It should never be taken to a recycling centre or civic amenity site. Instead, we provide a limited asbestos removal service for households within Belfast.
