Using your bin
When you misuse your bin, it limits the service we can provide.
As well as disrupting your household waste collections, it could also lead to us taking legal action against you.
What happens if I misuse my bin?
When you don't use your bin properly, we’ll firstly serve you with a legal notice. This outlines the legal requirements that you must comply with.If you don’t follow these, you could face a fine of up to £100 – this could rise to £1,000 if we take you to court.
But to make sure this doesn’t happen, here are some useful tips on using your bin correctly:
- You should have one black wheeled bin with a capacity of 240 litres. If there are six or more occupants in your household, you can apply for a bigger or additional bin.
- Don't put electrical items, bulky waste or heavy items in your black bin. Instead, you can arrange a free bulky waste collection for large or heavy items by calling us on 028 9027 0230. Do not put recyclable items in your black bin – these go in your blue bin or kerbside recycling box only.
- Make sure your bin has a lid and is firmly closed so that waste can't fall out.
- Don't leave any loose or bagged waste out for collection. We won't collect any waste left on top of the bin or on the ground at any distance from the bin.
- You mustn't put waste in any bin which you don't own or control.
- Identify all your bins by marking your house number and street name on them.
- Make sure you put your bin out before 7am on the day of collection.
- You should return your bin to your property as soon as possible after collection or, at the latest, before 8pm on the day of collection.
- You should keep the bin clean, disinfected and in good repair.
