Certificates

Our Registrar's office, located in Belfast City Hall, holds computerised registration records from 1997 to the present day.

Records from before this date are held by the General Register Office, based at Oxford House, 49-55 Chichester Street, Belfast, BT1 4HL. You can call them on 0300 200 7890 (from within Northern Ireland) or 028 91513101 (from outside Northern Ireland).

Birth certificates

When a birth is registered, you receive one free short birth certificate. Additional certificates, either short or full, may also be purchased at the time of registration for £8 per copy. You can pay by credit/debit card, cheque or cash.

After registration, you can get a copy of a birth certificate for someone who was born on or after 1 January 1997 from our Registrar's office, or any district registration office in Northern Ireland. It costs £15 per person, per application. If you request additional copies at the same time, these are charged at £8 per copy. If you were born on or before 31 December 1996, copies of certificates are available from the General Register Office, based at Oxford House, 49-55 Chichester Street, Belfast, BT1 4HL. Death certificates

When a death is registered, you receive one free short death certificate (Form 36). Additional certificates may also be purchased at the time of registration for £8 per copy. You can pay by credit/debit card, cheque or cash.

After registration, you can get a copy of a death certificate for someone whose death was registered on or after 1 January 1997 from our Registrar's office, or any district registration office in Northern Ireland. Marriage certificates

For weddings which took place on or after 1 January 2004, you can get a copy of your certificate from our Registrar's office, or any district registration office in Northern Ireland.

It costs £15 per person, per application. If you request additional copies at the same time, these are charged at £8 per copy. You can pay by credit/debit card, cheque or cash. For weddings before this date, copies of certificates can be obtained from the General Register Office, based at Oxford House, 49-55 Chichester Street, Belfast, BT1 4HL. Civil partnership certificates

You can get a copy of a civil partnership certificate from our Registrar's office, or any district registration office in Northern Ireland. It costs £15 per person, per application. If you request additional copies at the same time, these are charged at £8 per copy. You can pay by credit/debit card, cheque or cash.
