Food waste legislation

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency have introduced new legislation which means from 1 April 2017 all businesses that generate more than 5kg of food waste must have a separate food waste collection.

This law applies to:

  • commercial food businesses,
  • canteens,
  • social clubs,
  • schools, and
  • not-for-profit organisations.

It's the responsibility of the business to make the necessary arrangements to dispose of their waste. Our commercial waste service is one of many waste collection operators in the city that can provide a separate food waste collection service for you.

For more information, please call 028 9027 0735 or email comwaste@belfastcity.gov.uk

As part of this new legislation, we will not collect commercial waste which contains 5kg or more of food waste from 1 April 2017.

For more information please contact Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

If you do have a lot of food waste, you can get involved in our Bring home box scheme. As a business this will help to save money and reduce food waste costs. Visit our Bring home box webpage for more information on how to get involved.
