Our Belfast: Future City 2014

A vision for our city - 20 June 2014

We launched the Belfast: Future City initiative in 2013 as a mechanism to facilitate citywide discussions around strategic priorities for the city's development.

Following a successful conference in 2013, we’re now committed to continuing this city wide conversation through an annual conference for city leaders and other events.

2014 conference: a vision for our city centre

The 2014 Belfast: Future City conference took place on 20 June 2014 in Belfast Waterfront. It focused on the long-term vision for the city centre.

Delegates heard from internationally renowned urban development experts Urban Strategies, which had been commissioned to work with city leaders to develop a city centre regeneration and investment plan. Some of the initial findings and recommendations emerging as part of the plan were presented at the conference, including a range of priority places, projects and objectives for the city centre.  A video of the presentation delivered by Joe Berridge from Urban Strategies is below.

Delegates also heard some of Belfast's young people talk about their priorities for the long-term development of Belfast city centre in the video below.

With new community planning responsibilities transferring to local authorities in 2015 as a result of Local Government Reform, the conference represented an opportunity for us to outline this process and how it will lead to the development of a long-term vision and plan for the city, in partnership with other agencies, business, voluntary and community groups.

In the afternoon delegates were asked to take part in workshops.
