Physical investment

We pledged to spend £150 million on capital projects, as part of our Investment Programme, but we've actually increased this amount and will now spend over £340 million on improvement works in a decade.

This money will upgrade existing facilities and create new ones in our communities, with many projects delivered in partnership with others.

This is in addition to ongoing maintenance of our facilities, including parks, playgrounds and community centres.

Completed, underway and planned projects

So far, more than £185 million of projects are completed or underway. The map below shows where these are located across the city, together with details of other schemes which we hope to deliver, often in partnership with others.

Community projects

Councillors have played a key role in deciding what is needed in their areas, making sure our plans produce real results for you.

Funding streams like the Belfast Investment Fund and the Local Investment Fund have been set up to support large and small projects with direct community value.

Many of these projects are also delivered in partnership with others, but all have a common goal of building strong communities, right across Belfast.

External funding

It is important to get the right balance between:

  • easing the burden on residents and businesses
  • investing in Belfast to support our economic recovery
  • continuing to deliver excellent, value for money services.

To do this, our Investment Programme set a target of levering in £50 million of funding from Europe and other sources to pay for our plans.

We have far exceeded this target, bringing in almost £100 million from others.

Examples include securing £13.7 million from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport towards the Super-connected Belfast project.

This clip looks at our investment in south Belfast, and includes footage of Mary Peters Athletics Track, mountain bike trails at Barnett Demesne and a new bridge in Clement Wilson Park.

Residents talk about how the facilities have improved their community, while the video also highlights other investment plans for the area, including proposals for new playgrounds, sports pitches and smaller community projects.
