Burial records - project background

Old photographs We are responsible for maintaining burial records for the following cemeteries:

This information is currently held in large registers and burial order books in our Cemeteries and Crematorium Central Office, located in Belfast City Hall.

However, over the past few years, we have been working to digitise all of the records contained in our burial order books. This is because the books are becoming harder to read as they age and increasingly difficult to store as their number grows. We also want to preserve the information we look after, reduce the time it takes for our staff to access older records and make sure we comply with our responsibilities under Freedom of Information legislation.

We have now digitised most of the records we look after, and made them available to view as part of our online burial search facility. We are now carrying out a quality check of the records contained within the search to make sure they are accurate.

Some of the records have also been scanned, and it may be possible for some of these to be shown online, as part of the search facility, in the future.

Please note that, although we have decided to make the information contained within our burial records available online, the burial registers are still held in Belfast City Hall. Call us on 028 9027 0296 or email cemeteries@belfastcity.gov.uk for more information.
