Creative and digital sector development
Belfast’s international reputation for its distinct and original creative and digital sector is growing rapidly. We’ve worked very closely with the sector, particularly in the last decade, supporting its growth and promoting our talent internationally.
Over 20,000 people are now employed in the creative and digital industries, with around 1,600 businesses across the film, animation, music, mobile, gaming, and TV subsectors.
Under the name of Output Belfast, we work with a range of partners including Invest NI, NI Screen, Digital Catapult and Generator NI to help develop the film, interactive and music sectors. We support a wide range of meet ups and events including Digital DNA, BelTech, Cartoon Business and BBC’s Digital Cities Week.
Our intention is to continue to build upon these relationships in the year ahead and beyond.
You can find more details on our various events on our business events page.
We will profile our creative and digital sector through two key initiatives over the next twelve months. Full details, as and when these can be provided, will be highlighted clearly on our business events page.
Output Belfast conference and show case events
The annual one-day Output Belfast conference, which has been taking place since 2015, has now established itself as the largest music sector conference on the island of Ireland. This year’s event took place in February 2018, in The MAC, and addressed the challenges and opportunities that the music industry faces.
Output Belfast 2019 date, venue and full programme schedule will be announced in due course.
Creative Accelerator is an initiative designed to support new and early stage creative digital businesses seeking access to affordable hot desks and co-working space in Belfast, plus access to industry-specific coaching networks and international opportunities.
The programme aims to accelerate the growth of participating businesses and help boost the sector via knowledge transfer, networking, mentoring and access to new international business development opportunities. It is open to businesses located in the Belfast City Council area.
A priority subsector for this initiative is to support the development of companies working in the key sectors of film, TV, digital content, immersive technology and music.
We also intend to profile the sector at a number of key international events over the next 12 months.
South by Southwest (SXSW)
We have worked closely with a number of partners, over the last decade, to bring the very best of Belfast’s creativity to a global audience at the well-known South by Southwest (SXSW), the world’s leading conference for the music, film and interactive technology.
An important element of this type of support is to proactively work to develop local companies, working in the key sectors of film, TV, digital content, immersive technology and music.
We are already looking forward to the 2019 event, which will be taking place from 8 – 19 March 2019, Austin, Texas.
