Companies working in the advanced manufacturing sector had a combined turnover of around €8 million in 2014, with two thirds of this driven by export sales. 

The sector is supported by a strong research base, with the Northern Ireland Advanced Composites and Engineering Centre (NIACE) provides a unique collaborative research environment for 120 research and technical staff 4,000 sq metres of workshops, laboratories and office spaces.


The city’s manufacturing base is now dominated by the aeronautics industry.  Belfast plant is instrumental in developing its new C series planes, and the company has a supply chain of over 800 UK and Ireland companies accounting for over €400 million of investment in the local economy.

Renewable energies

The iconic cranes still stand proud in the city’s Titanic Quarter, but the company that employed 35,000 people at its peak during World War Two has evolved and its focus is now on the growing maritime, offshore and renewable energy sectors. The company is a world leader in design engineering, ship repair and conversion and assembly and logistical services for renewable energy products.
