Lifestyle in Belfast

Belfast has a tremendous quality of life. We are being increasingly recognised nationally and internationally. In March 2016, Belfast was named the best city in the UK at the Guardian and Observer Travel Awards.

Drag yourself away from the office to the great outdoors and you will find dramatic coastlines, castles, mountains, lakes, walking trails, scenic drives and historical landmarks all within easy reach.

Rich cultural scene

Belfast has award winning venues such as the Grand Opera House, the Lyric theatre and the MAC that play host to home grown and international productions. It is a city of festivals, staging over 70 festivals a year. These range from high profile, contemporary international events such as the Belfast International Arts Festival, to the recently established Belfast Comedy Festival.

Belfast is the birthplace of the Titanic. The stories of the great ship, and of the people involved in its construction are told in Titanic Belfast. The building provides a spectacular backdrop for major events like both the Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo and the MTV Europe Music Awards.

Belfast boasts its own eclectic mix of music. From classical concerts by our own Ulster Orchestra to traditional live music in our pubs, to the biggest pop and rock acts at the SSE Arena.

If sport is your thing, some of the greatest golf courses in the world are on our doorstep. Royal County Down, just 40 minutes from Belfast, was recently voted the best course in the world by US Golf Digest and will host the Irish Open in 2017 while Royal Portrush, 60 minutes from Belfast, will host the 148th Open in 2019.

Culinary delights

Belfast’s culinary scene has been transformed in recent years.

  • Two of our restaurants, Deane's Eipic and Ox, were recently awarded Michelin stars.
  • St George's Market has an outstanding reputation with foodies, and was voted best large indoor market in the UK.
  • British Airways High Life Magazine listed Belfast as one of the top ten places in the world for food and drink in 2015. 2016 is the Northern Ireland Year of Food and Drink.

Quality of life

The quality of life in Belfast is first rate. We are one of the happiest cities in the UK, and we remain one of the most affordable cities in the UK. There’s an excellent education system, a world class healthcare service and affordable residential property.
