About the project
Local rural areas are set to benefit from a major injection of funding from the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme (NIRDP) 2007 – 2013.The Lagan Rural Partnership has been allocated £8.7 million to invest in projects in rural areas within the Lisburn City, Castlereagh Borough and Belfast City Council areas.
The partnership is a newly formed Local Action Group that will act as the delivery agent for the ‘Rural Life’ axis of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme.
It comprises of elected members and representatives from the farming, business and community sectors from all three council areas.
The new fund aims to improve the quality of life in rural areas by supporting a wide range of activities through six measures:
- 3.1 Diversification into non-agricultural activities
- 3.2 Business creation and development
- 3.3 Encouragement of tourism activities
- 3.4 Basic services for the economy and rural population
- 3.5 Village renewal and development
- 3.6 Conservation and upgrading of the rural heritage.

Hannahstown
Supported by Belfast City Council, a consultation has taken place with local residents and stakeholders of Hannahstown to produce a Strategic Vision and Action Plan to improve Hannahstown physically, socially and economically.This plan indicates a number of projects which once realised would deliver the four keys aims drawn up through consultation with the community.
The development of the plan is taking place as part of support offered to rural communities through Axis 3 of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.
