Connswater Community Greenway

Connswater Community Greenway Connswater Community Greenway is one of our City Investment Strategy projects aiming to help physically develop Belfast and create a sense of pride in the city, as well as improving quality of life for citizens and visitors.

The project includes:
  • the revitalisation of the Knock, Loop and Connswater Rivers
  • the construction of 16.5km of new walking and cycle paths
  • 40 new or improved existing bridges
  • new play facilities
  • the creation of enhanced and new natural habitat
  • improved linkages with council parks along the route and with local communities.
The greenway project is due to start on site in September 2010 and finish in late 2013.

The route

The greenway runs along the course of Loop, Knock and Connswater rivers, as well as passing through:

Features

Connswater Community Greenway will benefit the 40,000 people living in the surrounding area, improving access, safety and quality of green and open space in East Belfast.

When complete, the project will incorporate:
  • 5.2km of restored watercourses
  • a new civic square at Holywood Arches
  • 13.3 hectares of public park enhancement
  • seven new tourism and heritage trails
  • several landmark public art pieces.
The greenway will also provide access to key surrounding facilities, including:
  • two leisure centres
  • two libraries
  • 24 schools
  • a key health centre
  • a major shopping centre

Funding

We've teamed up with Big Lottery Fund UK and the Department for Social Development to fund the Connswater Community Greenway project. The project is due to cost £32 million.

As well as this, there will be additional flood defence work implemented on behalf of Rivers Agency. This will cost around £9 million.
