I want to get married or have a civil partnership in the City Hall, what is the process?

  • Decide when you want to get married or have a civil partnership and call our registration office 028 9027 0455 to check availability. The law requires at least 28 days notice.
  • We will hold your date in the diary for one week to enable you to give notice. 
  • To give notice, you need to complete two marriage notice application forms or civil partnership notice application forms and provide two full birth certificates and your passports. 

If you have previously been married or in a civil partnership or if you do not hold an EEU passport, please call us on 028 9027 0455 for advice. 

I want to get married or have a civil partnership at an approved venue, what is the process?

  • Decide on the venue but don’t confirm your date with the venue until you have checked the availability of a registrar. The law requires at least 28 days notice.
  • Call our registration office 028 9027 0455 to check availability. 
  • We will hold your date in the diary for one week to enable you to give notice. 
  • To give notice, you need to complete two marriage notice application forms or civil partnership notice application forms and provide an AP1 form from the venue, two full birth certificates and your passports.

I am having a religious ceremony, what is the process?

  • The law requires 28 days notice. If your ceremony venue is in the Belfast district you will give notice in the City Hall. 
  • To give notice, you need to complete two marriage notice application forms. You will need to get one of the forms signed by the officiant such as the priest or minister. You’ll also need to provide two full birth certificates and your passports.
