Heating your home

Stay warm at winter

As the temperature continues to drop, it is important to keep yourself warm and take particular care of your health and well being.

There are many things we can do to help manage the cost of heating our homes. These include joining a local oil buying club, or buying fuel stamps.

Oil buying club

In an oil buying club, all the members place their oil order with a coordinator who negotiates the best bulk price with a supplier. Once the price per litre is agreed, everyone pays the same price per litre (regardless of how much they ordered) directly to the oil supplier.

Members can save between £10 and £30 per delivery.

For more information on how to set up your own oil buying club, visit our home heating page.

Find a local oil club

  • To find out if there is an oil club near you, visit the Citizens Advice website. You can also register your oil club.

Organisations that can help

We also have some template documents that can help with budgeting and planning.

If you're interested in setting up a club, local groups can help with access to computers or equipment.

Fuel Stamp Scheme

Our fuel stamp scheme 'Be Warm' helps householders save for home heating oil, by spreading the cost of their fuel.

You can buy oil stamps from participating retailers, collect them on a savings card and use the value of the stamps to pay for all or part of your oil when placing an order.

The scheme is available throughout Belfast and we're always looking for retailers and oil companies from across the city to take part in the scheme.

To take part pick up a 'Be Warm' savings card from any of the retailers taking part in the scheme.

Winter Fuel Payments

Winter Fuel Payments are made to help with heating costs during periods of cold weather. The payment is paid automatically by the Social Security Agency to qualifying groups.

Seniors can also apply for a winter fuel payment from the Social Security Agency. These are available to people receiving a state pension or certain benefits, as well as those in employment, if they are eligible. For more information for Seniors, you can visit our stay warm at winter page.

Visit the NIDirect website to check if you are entitled to a payment. If you or someone you know qualifies for this payment, you can use this money to buy 'Be Warm' oil savings stamps.
