Hate crime

Unite Against Hate logo Hate crime is when people abuse or attack others because of sectarianism, race, disability, faith or sexual orientation.

We have made dealing with hate crime a key priority, as part of our Safer Belfast plan, and are working with a range of partners to tackle the problem. Our projects include:

Funding for anti-hate crime projects

Are you organising an event which fights hate crime by changing attitudes? If so, your event could be eligible for a grant of up to £500.

Events can be large or small and could involve activities such as cooking, music, sport, art or drama.

Successful applicants must meet our evaluation criteria and awards will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Unite Against Hate convention

This is an annual conference which looks at the root causes of hate crime and reinforces the message that it will not be tolerated by society.

It is open to anyone working with local communities, as well as statutory and voluntary groups.

Previous conventions have led to several successful initiatives, including ‘tension monitoring’ by the council and our partner agencies, such as the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Housing Executive, in areas where attacks are common.

For more information, call Richard McLernon on 028 9032 0202 (extension 3324).
