Wanted: Volunteers to go back to School
Each year, hundreds of volunteers from local businesses go into classrooms to help young people develop leadership and communication skills. Local schools are looking for volunteers to deliver enterprise programmes for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Young Enterprise’s Primary Programme is delivered to 5000 primary school children aged 5-12 across Belfast. It aims to show young people the relevance of education to the work place. It helps them to understand their economic world, and prepares them for learning and lifelong achievement.
As a registered charity Young Enterprise relies on the generosity of its volunteers to help deliver the programme. Volunteers give up around six hours of their time over a six week period to go into the schools and share their work experiences by following a structured format provided by Young Enterprise.
Jenny Thompson a volunteer on the Young Enterprise Programme comments “I thoroughly enjoyed the programme. An excellent opportunity to do something very different – refreshing and inspiring.”
The programme is supported by Belfast City Council and the European Regional Development Fund. It is having considerable impact on improving the quality of life and well-being of the communities in which it operates by ensuring that enterprise education starts at an early age.
Commenting on the benefits of the programme for local children Noelle Clarke from St Anne’s Primary School states, “Excellent – Thank you. Clear objectives, total pupil participation. The presenter was excellent, great interaction with the pupils, level of work was great. Pupils gained a great deal from the work.”
