Shopping from home - what is the law?
The purchase of goods from your own home is regulated by the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.Whether you order something online, over the telephone, from a television shopping channel or by mail order, you're protected by extra rights.
The law also gives you time to cancel your order and receive a full refund.
It states that:
- you must be given clear information about the goods or services you want to purchase before actually buying them
- goods must be delivered within 30 days unless agreed otherwise
- you have a 'cooling-off' period in which you can withdraw from your contract for any reason. This period begins as soon as the order has been made.
- for goods, it ends seven working days after the day you receive the items
- for services, it ends seven working days after the day of your order. If you agree to the service beginning within the seven days, your right to cancel ends when the service starts. You must also be told that you will not be able to cancel the service after it starts.
