Consumer safety

Man and woman looking at consumer safety leaflets Lots of people are injured each year due to faulty consumer goods.

Part of our job involves protecting the public against the supply of dangerous goods which are intended for private sale.

We do this by carrying out inspections of premises to make sure that goods sold in Belfast are safe. Examples of goods we inspect include:
Our officers also offer advice to premises about the regulations they must meet.

From time to time, they test a range of consumer goods in-house or send them to approved 'test houses' to check they meet the relevant health and safety standards.

Complaints and queries

If you've bought a product which you feel is unsafe, call us on 028 9027 0428 and we'll investigate your complaint. We may also examine or test the goods.

Any action we take will only be in relation to the product's safety as our officers don't get involved in issues relating to refunds or compensation.

However, our Consumer Advice Centre offers free, specialist advice for consumer-related queries and can answer any further questions you may have.
