Product safety
Making sure that goods sold to the public are safe to use is the responsibility of everyone involved in their supply, including manufacturers and retailers.This means that the products they sell must comply with any relevant legislation or safety standards.
Most goods are regulated by the Consumer Protection Act 1987.
Advice when buying goods
When buying goods, you should always:- only buy from reputable suppliers and shops
- look for safety symbols and signs, for example, a CE mark should be clearly displayed on all toys and electrical products
- read and follow all warnings and instructions
- only use products for the purpose they are intended.
Second hand products
All second hand items supplied to the public must be safe. This includes furniture, toys and electrical appliances.We have produced a guide for suppliers of second hand goods which explains the requirements they must meet.
