Rates for 2014-2015

Your rates bill is made up of the regional and district rates.

District rate

The district rate, set by us, makes up 44 per cent of your overall rates bill.  For two successive years, we have frozen the district rate increase. We've achieved this by planning £2 million cash savings again for this year. This is part of our wider efficiency programme where we've pledged to generate £20 million of savings by 2015.

The district rate is the main source of income for councils with about 75 per cent of our income coming from rates.

Regional rate

The regional rate, set by central government, makes up 56 per cent of your rates bill. The regional rate, subject to Executive approval, is due to increase by 2.7 per cent. With a 2.7 per cent increase in the regional rate, and no increase to the district rate, the overall effect on the ratepayer will be an increase of around 1.49 per cent in total. This means an average weekly increase of:

  • 17p per week for a terrace house
  • 26p per week for a semi-detached three bedroom house
  • 59p per week for a four-bedroom detached house.
