Definition
The 'Creative Industries' are:'...those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill, and talent, and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.'
Creativity and innovation have always been the life blood of cities and regions across the globe and the industries whose foundation is in creativity and innovation now play a significant role in the development of a city's profile, development and overall economy.
Shaped by the priorities set out by its Local Economic Development Strategy 'Sustaining Competitive Advantage 2002 – 2006', the Council is committed to the support and development of this high growth sector with local companies, providing jobs and spreading new wealth around the city, to establish a stronger economic base for the entire city's people.
The Creative Industries are a national asset but they spring from a local context. For the prosperity and social coherence of Belfast to advance it is essential that there is continuous development and exploitation of local creativity. We will ensure a supportive business environment to allow the sector to develop. The establishment of creative clusters, relevant business mentoring and support and the design and development of appropriate infrastructure are essential components of this support.

Design - Architecture - Craft & Design - Fashion and Textiles
Media - Advertising - Film - Digital media and Games - Publishing - Software - Television and Radio
Expressive - Music - Performing Arts - Visual Arts
Key sub-sectors of the Creative Industries identified by Belfast City Council are:
Design-related industries (including Textiles, Craft, Design and Fashion)
Media and Knowledge (including Television, Film, Digital Media and Software development).
