Exploring Belfast's cultural life

With a population of just 300,000, Belfast is a compact city of differing traditions, bound together by a commonality of friendship and a genuine welcome for visitors. The friendliness and warmth of its people along with a fascinating cultural heritage make Belfast a great place to visit.

Belfast’s cultural renaissance has witnessed the arrival of a new generation of cultural venues, visitor attractions, bars, hotels, restaurants, lots of cultural activity and many world renowned international festivals. More than 50 different festivals take place in Belfast each year and, in 2005 alone, more than half a million people attended festival events in the city.

The oldest part of the city, the Cathedral Quarter, has become a hub for entertainment and arts activities. Home to May’s annual Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, the area boasts a mix of hip bars and restaurants, contemporary art galleries and the magnificent St Anne’s Cathedral.
