John McSorley in the Higgin Gallery

Date: 30 Sep 2018 - 27 Oct 2018
Venue: Malone House

From his home overlooking the Narrows of Strangford Lough, John McSorley feels alert to the pulse of the natural year, able to observe the changes in earth, sea and sky, especially the night sky, with its uninterrupted view of moon and stars. Over the past thirty years he has shown work in the major Belfast galleries - Caldwell’s, Gormley’s, Canvas, and the Emer, as well as the Higgin at Malone House.

Many of his paintings reflect his fascination with that special, magical light that has become his calling card, so loved by those who admire his work. Art critic Lee Henry of CultureNothernIreland described McSorley as ‘truly a magician at evoking the character and atmosphere of a setting’, while Belfast Telegraph critic Liz Baird admired his style as ‘precise and careful, detailed yet stylised, his images haunting yet romantic, his subjects dreamlike’.
