Fairtrade Belfast conference
On Wednesday 20 January 2010, some of the biggest Fairtrade organisations in the UK and Ireland attended a conference in Belfast City Hall to discuss Fairtrade issues. They included:
- Fairtrade Mark Ireland
- UK Fairtrade Foundation
- Bristol City Council
- Sustainable Development Commission
- Northern Ireland Co-operative
- Oxfam Ireland
- Java Republic Coffee
- European Commission Office for Northern Ireland.
As well as raising awareness of the role of Fairtrade in Belfast, the event also focused on the measures we can all take to support worldwide small-scale producers and help them trade successfully in the global market.
Objectives
As well as giving organisations the chance to come together to discuss Fairtrade, the seminar aimed to:- raise the profile of Fairtrade as a way to deliver improved prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, market access and fair terms of trade for farmers in the developing world
- engage politicians, local authorities, government departments and other relevant stakeholders and work towards establishing local Fairtrade groups and help them secure Fairtrade accreditation
- highlight the role of local authorities, retailers, workplaces and community organisations in promoting Fairtrade.
