Why is the North Foreshore suitable for a waste treatment facility?


At a special council meeting in June 2009, our councillors decided to release a portion of land on the North Foreshore to allow arc 21 to build a new waste treatment facility.

The site will house a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility, not an Energy from Waste (EFW) plant, which was also suggested.

The Planning Service have produced a draft Belfast Metropolitan Area Plan (BMAP) which has identified the North Foreshore for open space and recreation purposes, as well as for employment, including waste management.

There are currently no residential developments near the site and it is close to a major road network.

The site is also well-placed to distribute any electricity and heat generated.
