At a special council meeting in June 2009, our councillors decided to release a portion of land on the North Foreshore to allow arc 21 to build a new waste treatment facility.
The site will house a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility, not an Energy from Waste (EFW) plant, which was also suggested.
The MBT facility will sort and compact waste before it is sent to landfill or to an EFW plant. This will help us to meet legislative targets laid out by the European Union, which limit the amount of waste we send to landfill. It will also encourage us to recycle more of the waste we produce.
