Segregation and deprivation in Belfast

While social divisions between Catholics and Protestants are seen throughout Northern Ireland, they are most obvious in Belfast. On the whole, people in Belfast celebrate different traditions and live, attend school and socialise separately.

Despite recent political developments, statistics show that polarisation is rising, with an increasing number of people living in segregated areas. This is particularly obvious in Housing Executive estates and in Belfast's many interfaces, some of which are marked by physical barriers.

Belfast is the most deprived council area in Northern Ireland, especially in terms of health, education, skills and training; interface areas have consistently high rates of social, economic and environmental disadvantage
