Active lifestyles

An active lifestyle can make you physically fitter, improve your mental health and make you less prone to illness.

But, if you suffer from health-related problems, it can be hard to know where to start. We offer various active lifestyle programmes which can make it easier for you to get active.

Healthwise

Our leisure centres run a Healthwise scheme with the Public Health Agency. We develop a keep-fit programme for you, and monitor any improvements to your health. Your doctor or healthcare practitioner can refer you for a free 12-week programme if you suffer from any of these conditions:

  • high blood pressure
  • a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25
  • asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • diabetes
  • osteoporosis
  • hypertension
  • coronary heart disease and associated risk factors
  • anxiety
  • stress
  • depression.

We also work with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust to deliver physical activity sessions to inpatients at the Mater Hospital, Belfast as part of the Healthwise scheme.

If you are not currently active and would like to take part in the programme, speak to your doctor or a health practitioner.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase IV

If you’re recovering from health problems, including heart attacks, angina and coronary artery bypass surgery, you can take part in this 12-week physical activity programme.

You need to complete Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase III before you can get referred for phase IV by a cardiac nurse.

The programme will increase your physical activity levels and improve your lifestyle and wellbeing. It will also help you manage your condition better, improve your health and reduce the risk of further coronary heart disease.

You will take part in group-based activities with qualified cardiac rehabilitation staff at a leisure centre of your choice, for one hour per week. After the 12 weeks you will have the opportunity to take part in a further 12 week continuation class to help you maintain your activity level and further improve your condition.

Programmes currently take place in Olympia, Avoniel, Grove and Andersonstown Leisure Centres.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation programme is funded by the Public Health Agency, as part of Active Belfast.
