Respect Through Sport programme
Are you a member of a youth club or other organisation for young people? Would you like to learn more about your area and the issues which affect it? If so, our Respect for Sport programme could be for you.
It works with local community groups from across Belfast to develop cultural diversity, respect and understanding through sport and physical activity.
If your group is interested in taking part in future Respect Through Sport schemes, email your details to indoortenniscentre@belfastcity.gov.uk or shankill@belfastcity.gov.uk
A total of 200 teenagers from across Belfast took part in the 2010 scheme, tackling key issues, including race, sectarianism and inequality, while playing different sports and developing new skills, such as the importance of working as a team and learning how to 'play fair'.
For the first time, young people from north and west Belfast aged nine to 15 also took part in the programme at Shankill Leisure Centre
Participants took part in a range of activities, including canoeing, swimming and Kidzfit gym (all at Shankill Leisure Centre), tennis, Laser Zone and basketball (at Indoor Tennis Centre and Ozone Complex), as well as many other sport and fitness-related classes.
The sports element of Respect Through Sport is delivered by fully qualified coaches from Sportsopps, while the cultural relations aspects are taken by qualified staff.
For more information, call the Indoor Tennis Centre and Ozone Complex on 028 9045 8024 or Shankill Leisure Centre on 028 9091 8750.
This programme is partly funded by the European Union Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (2007-2013), managed by the Special EU Programmes Body
