Glens fan Jim has the `Blues`

3 October 2007

He may be a lifelong Glentoran fan, but the Lord Mayor of Belfast was the main player in Linfield football team`s celebrations.

Big hearted Councillor Jim Rodgers threw open the doors of the City Hall for a reception to congratulate the Blues for their League and Cup double in 2006/07.

“It is a wonderful gesture by the Lord Mayor and typical of his generosity – even if he is a Glens man through and through,” quipped Linfield FC Secretary, Ken Greer.

“The Lord Mayor has always been very helpful to us as a club and while he might be a Director of Glentoran – our greatest rivals – we`ll forgive him that!

"Seriously, though, he has never allowed that allegiance to stand in the way of being impartial, and we really appreciate his support”.

And Belfast`s First Citizen added:

“No doubt I can look forward to lots of good-natured banter about this, but actually I was delighted to host these celebrations. All credit to Linfield for their achievements – although I should warn them that the Glens are well and truly `on the ball` for this season!”
