Event to mark abolition of slave trade

10 October 2007

A special event to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade is being held in Belfast.

The Afro-Community Support Organisation Northern Ireland (ACSONI) is hosting ROTAS-T200 at the King`s Hall on Saturday 20 October, from 11am to 9pm.

The free event, open to everyone, will feature different activities for children, including drum workshops, storytelling and face painting, together with art and sculpture exhibitions, Afro-Caribbean music, dancing, poetry and a fashion show.

There also will be a chance to sample Afro-Caribbean food, crafts and Fairtrade products, as well as lectures and discussions by keynote speakers.

The day will end with a live concert by a line-up of Afro-Caribbean artists, including special guests Natty Wailer and the acclaimed steel band, Tura.

There will be free parking available within the King`s Hall complex.

ROTAS-T200 is supported by Awards for All, Belfast City Council and the PSNI.

Dr Christopher Stange, of ACSONI, said:

“The event offers something for everyone, bringing communities closer together as Northern Ireland becomes more multi-cultural and diverse.

“All the different communities play an important role in the economic and social regeneration of Northern Ireland, including the Afro-Community, which is becoming one of the largest ethnic minority communities. We would like to welcome you to a fun-filled day of learning and celebrating our history, culture, food and music.”
