Plan to create a safer Belfast
18 February 2008
A new `Safer City Plan`, to tackle the fear of crime and antisocial behaviour, is being developed by the Belfast Community Safety Partnership, led by Belfast City Council.
The partnership was established in 2004 and launched its first community safety strategy for Belfast in 2005. Since then, it has gone on to develop and support more than 30 projects.
During Criminal Justice Week (18 – 24 February), the partnership is holding daily events to highlight the work being carried out in the community.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Jim Rodgers, said:
“Belfast Community Safety Partnership has seen considerable achievements over the last three years.
“A series of warden services has been launched across the city. A recent evaluation of the Holyland warden service, for example, has found there has been a 24 per cent reduction in burglary since the introduction of the service.
“The Partnership has supported more than 35 community and voluntary groups through its small grants programme and introduced the first alleygating scheme in Northern Ireland.
“Belfast Community Safety Partnership is now leading the development of a new Safer City Plan for Belfast and is looking forward to celebrating our achievements during Criminal Justice week.
“We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of our partners and local communities. Ultimately it`s about helping to create a safer Belfast.”
Criminal Justice Week runs from 18 – 22 February 2008. For information on events organised by the Belfast Community Safety Partnership, visit www.belfastcity.gov.uk/communitysafety
