Lord Mayor launches intergenerational booklet

22 February 2008

As part of Belfast Criminal Justice Week, Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers has launched a new booklet highlighting work being done between generations in the city, to help reduce crime and the fear of crime.

The project came about following the establishment of Belfast Community Safety Partnership in 2004 which aims to help create a safer city.

Using funding received from Belfast Community Safety Partnership, and the contributions of other partners such as Age Concern, the Belfast Intergenerational Project was established in October 2006.

Its aim is to reduce the fear of crime amongst the most vulnerable, to influence others to reduce the fear of crime and to contribute to a reduction in the level of prejudice and hatred that leads to crime.

In partnership with Age Concern NI and Clifton House, Belfast Community Safety Partnership now supports 14 intergenerational projects across Belfast. These projects promote the benefits of intergenerational approaches to building relationships and reducing the fear of crime.

The Lord Mayor said:

“I would like to take this opportunity to commend the work of Belfast Community Safety Partnership, Age Concern and other partners in supporting an approach which I believe will have a long lasting impact upon the city and its future.

“But, in particular I would like to pay tribute to those individuals who have worked together to build relationships, share experiences and improve each others` lives.

“This booklet shows how attitudes can be changed and relationships can be established and I hope we can continue to work together to help create a safer city for now and future generations.”

David McConnell, from Age Concern, said:

“Intergenerational engagement exposes the myths about youth and age being incompatible. The participants invariably discover what they have in common.

“They are each viewed as a problem to be addressed, they feel no-one listens to them and they are both vulnerable to abuse.”
