A `Swinging` start to Week of Dance
30 August 2005
Swing Belfast wants people of all ages, shapes and sizes to join them on Saturday September 10 to try their hand (and feet!) at lindy hop (swing), belly dancing, salsa, Tango, Disco and hip-hop – and all for charity!
As part of this year`s Belfast City Council Week of Dance, the King`s Head, in south Belfast, will be hosting the launch of the week in the Live Lounge with a day of fun workshops and themed night with live music from swing band, Maria Vincent and The Millionaires.
The workshops during the day will be a show case of the different types of dance that is offered in Belfast. Highlights are Swing classes from `2003 Lindy Hop Swing Champion’, Paul Neary, and Tango from Audrey Martinez, who has been teaching tango in New York City for the last 11 years.
Music for the night will be supplied by UK swing band, Maria Vincent and The Millionaires, who have gained a reputation for putting on a great show with their authentic and exciting performances.
The aim of the night is to bring an atmosphere and style of the old-fashioned dance halls (circa 1920s-70s) so dress for the mood! Suggested dress code is eveningwear but 20s-70s is preferred.
Not only will people be able to do a turn on the dance floor, but they`ll also be doing a good turn for charity, as all money raised goes to Northern Ireland Mother and Baby Action (NIMBA).
Swing Belfast instructor, Joe Monaghan, said: “We are offering a range of dance `taster’ sessions to encourage as many people as possible to come and give dance a try. So this event – and the week as a whole – is geared towards getting people involved in dance, not just for fun but as a means of keeping fit too!
“We are delighted that we have been able to get the UK`s Lindy Hop Swing champion for 2003, Paul Neary, to hold some swing lessons for the evening dance. To create a real party atmosphere and to get everyone in the mood, we are also offering a prize for the best outfit so now`s the time to get rummaging around in the attic for some classic clothes!
“We hope that people of all ages will come along and have a go – not only will they have a great time and make new friends, they`ll also be helping a very worthwhile charity.”
The events are as follows:
1pm - 6pm: Workshops in lindy hop (swing), Tango, belly dancing, salsa, disco and hip-hop.
6pm - 7pm: Workshops in lindy hop (swing) from `2003 Lindy Hop Swing Champion’, Paul Neary.
9pm - 1am: Swing night with Maria Vincent and the Millionaires
