Everyone WINS with a road show

26 August 2005

Visiting your local leisure or community centre could soon offer you more than better health if you`re a woman interested in an enjoyable and interesting career in a non-traditional sector.

Belfast City Council which is leading the WINS Project (Women Into Non-Traditional Sectors) has organised a road show visiting local leisure and community centres during September to offer women information on the project and the opportunity to experience jobs which have traditionally been seen as just for men.

If you want to find out more contact your local centre or the WINS Project Team either by telephone on 028 9032 0202, extension 5235 or by email at wins@belfastcity.gov.uk

Heather Louden who is leading the project for Belfast City Council said: “WINS wants to change commonly held perceptions of these types of jobs through a programme of training and work experience.

“The training and work experience placements will last for approximately 12 weeks and opportunities to join commence in late 2005 and will continue until June 2007.

“Research has shown that the type of women we are hoping to attract need to be reached in a way that is different from your typical job advert which is why we came up with the idea of the road show. Visiting it will allow women to learn about working in the type of job they may be interested in and hear first hand experience of what the job entails, how flexible it can be and the benefits of getting involved.”

The types of jobs covered by the project include street cleansing, grounds maintenance, horticulture and driving jobs. Initial research conducted by the project shows that women who enter non traditional employment really enjoy the work.

The WINS Project is part financed by the European Social Fund under the NI EQUAL Community Initiative Programme.

Come along to one of the WINS road shows in community centres and leisure centres around Belfast or visit our stand at the Jobscene Exhibition on 22/23 September 2005 at the Odyssey Arena.
