Olympic Torch to be welcomed to Belfast

10 May 2012

The Olympic Torch will be officially welcomed to Belfast on the evening of Wednesday 6 June.

Tickets will be available from 15 May for a major outdoor event, with a packed programme of entertainment, broadcast live on BBC and culminating in the Torch`s arrival at the City Hall, where it will be officially received by the Lord Mayor.

The iconic symbol of the Olympic Games, the Torch will arrive in the city, from the Isle of Man, late on the evening of Saturday 2 June. The next morning it will leave the new Titanic Belfast building at just after 6am, from where it will tour North Down and Ards, arriving back in Belfast for stops at Stormont and the Zoo. From there, it will head up the coast to Portrush and, over the next couple of days, the torch will make its way around Northern Ireland, as well as heading over the border to Dublin.

The torch returns to Belfast on Wednesday June 6. It will leave Dublin shortly after 9am, travelling north through Newry and Lisburn, arriving in Belfast shortly before 5pm.

The torch will then take two hours travelling around the city, starting in Clifton Street and taking in York Street, Duncairn Gardens, the Antrim Road, Cliftonville Road, Clifton Park Avenue, Agnes Street, Shankill Road, Lanark Way, Springfield Road and Grosvenor Road into the city centre. It will then head into east Belfast, taking in the Albertbridge Road, Newtownards Road and Bridge End.

The relay will finish at the City Hall, where a large outdoor event – being broadcast live on BBC One – will take place from 6pm - 8pm and set the scene for the Torch`s arrival. The event will feature an array of entertainment over the two hours – including General Fiasco, Sontas and the City Of Belfast School of Music Junior Choir.

Free tickets for the event will be available from the Belfast Welcome Centre from 10am next Tuesday (May 15), on a first come first served basis, with a limit of four tickets per person. Terms and conditions will apply. Full details are available from www.belfastcity.gov.uk/events or the Belfast Welcome Centre on 028 9024 6609.
