Free outdoor gig to welcome Olympic Torch to Belfast

23 May 2012

General Fiasco will top the bill at a free outdoor concert at City Hall to mark the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Belfast.

A packed programme of entertainment, which will be broadcast live on the BBC, has been lined up for the evening of Wednesday, June 6, when the torch will arrive at City Hall and be officially received by the Lord Mayor.

Tickets for the concert - which will also feature former Olympians, dance act Twist and Pulse (finalists in Britain`s Got Talent in 2010), Sontas (a traditional fusion music group) and the City of Belfast School of Music Junior Choir - are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre now.

The iconic symbol of the Olympic Games, the torch will arrive in the city, from the Isle of Man, late on the evening of Saturday 2 June. The next morning it will leave the new Titanic Belfast building at just after 6am, from where it will tour North Down and Ards, arriving back in Belfast for stops at Stormont and the zoo.

From there, it will head up the coast to Portrush and, over the next couple of days, the torch will make its way around Northern Ireland, as well as heading over the border to Dublin.

The torch returns to Belfast on Wednesday June 6. It will leave Dublin shortly after 9am, travelling north through Newry and Lisburn, arriving in Belfast shortly before 5pm.

The torch will then take two hours travelling around the city, with crowds expected to line the route. It will start in Clifton Street and take in York Street, Duncairn Gardens, the Antrim Road, Cliftonville Road, Clifton Park Avenue, Agnes Street, Shankill Road, Lanark Way, Springfield Road and Grosvenor Road into the city centre. It will then head into east Belfast, taking in the Albertbridge Road, Newtownards Road and Bridge End.

The concert will take place at City Hall between 6pm and 8pm on June 6.

Tickets are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre, Donegall Place, on a first come first served basis, with a limit of four tickets per person. Terms and conditions will apply. Full details are available from www.belfastcity.gov.uk/events or the Belfast Welcome Centre on 028 9024 6609.
