Growing a healthy respect

1 June 2012

Encouraging people to have respect for their health is the idea behind an event at Andersonstown Leisure Centre later this month.

Organised as part of the `Growing Respect` inter-generational programme, there are health checks and holistic therapies, information stands and taster sessions.

Taking place on Wednesday, 20 June the event is being organised by Belfast City Council, the West Belfast Partnership Board and Healthy Hearts in the West.

Councillor Steven Corr, Chairman of the Parks and Leisure Committee, is urging all age groups to attend, especially as obesity is a growing problem among our population.

“Socially deprived areas like West Belfast also suffer greater health problems among its populations so anything we can do to improve it is worth doing,” said Councillor Corr.

“There are specific sessions for each age group but whenever people come along they will, I am sure, learn something of interest or something they can use to improve their health.

The `Growing Respect` programme is aimed at tackling anti-racism and anti-sectarianism by encouraging people to work together for the benefit of all and we can help each other in making sure everyone in our community has the chance to be as healthy as they can be.

“Taster sessions of aqua aerobics, zumba, tai-chi or boccia are a good way of trying something new and a fabulous way to reach for a healthy heart. We will also have MOT health checks and holistic therapies to try,” said the councillor

People can drop in on any of the sessions but the morning between 10am-1pm will specifically focus on activities for seniors, other adults will be catered for in the afternoon between 2-5pm when a crèche will also be available, while teenagers and younger adults are encouraged to visit between 6-9pm.

`Growing Respect` is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, through the European Union`s PEACE lll Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
