Market launches national awards bid

Belfast City Council has launched a bid to have St George`s Market recognized as the `Best Food Market` in the United Kingdom in the annual BBC Food and Farming Awards – probably the most prestigious awards of their type in the sector.
This year`s judging panel is chaired by celebrity chef Angela Hartnett and includes such well known figures as chef Arthur Potts-Dawson, the broadcasters Valentine Warner and Charles Campion, writers Pete Brown, Victoria Moore and Simon Parkes – and Sheila Dillon, the Belfast-born presenter of the BBC `Good Food` programme.
“Every year, St George`s Market has been nominated in the `Best Food Market` category, and every year our performance has improved, with 2011 marking our best year ever, when we finished in the top three,” commented Alderman Christopher Stalford, Chairman of Belfast City Council`s Development Committee.
“However, this year we are determined to do even better and win the award…
“St George`s is widely recognized – and quite rightly so – for the high quality of the food products it offers, from some of the finest farmers across Northern Ireland, and it has received many prestigious awards over the years, from the likes of The Observer, for example. However, the BBC Food and Farming Awards so far have eluded us – a position we are determined to change this year.
“We would urge everyone who has shopped at St George`s Market to support our bid to become `Best Food Market` by voting for us. And, if you haven`t sampled the delights of the Market yet, come down and do so, and then tell the nation by casting your vote.”
